Mini or a 126p?

Post autor: Sophie »

Hi, I'm new to the forum and this is my first post.

My name is Sophie and my partner is Jeff Ruggles, a writer for Mini Magazine in England. We are both mini lovers, I have a Minivan and Jeff has 2 1275GT's.

In April, Jeff and I will be coming to Poland with the hope of driving home in a fiat 126. However niether of us speak Polish or have any understanding of Polish law and so i have come to you to ask for help.

We will be heading for the Katowice/Krakow area and looking to buy the 126 while we are there. We do not want to spend too much money and we are more than prepared to break down on the way home but as mini owners, this will not be out of the ordinary
I have found a few sites (allegro.pl auto.pl) which have helped me in sourcing cars but we also have to think about insuring the car to get home.

Do you know of anyone who has taken a car to England on a permanent basis? Any help and advise will be greatly appreciated! Our journey will hopefully be in a magazine and your help will not go unnoticed!

We are also heading down to Balkanska Minijada in Serbia. I hope to see you there.

Sophie

Most of polish cars in England are exploited as a temporary. You can always say taht You came here 2 days ago  If You want to buy 126p in Poland You can try to find registered one and then buy insurance, or maybe it will be with insurance. Then You can drive home...

Can't You find one in UK? I saw few 126p in Manchester, and steering wheel was on the right side

As foreigners You can buy a car in Poland and then you have to temporary register Your 126p. You have 30 days to register a car. You will need: application form, passport and ID card, car selling agreement between You and former owner, plates and registration card. It's said that you have to have a temporary stay card to register vehicle but you're an EU citizens so I think it's not mandatory. When you buy your 126p don't forget to cancel the insurance (30 days). In Poland if you don't do it the insurance is automatically prolonged. And about insurance: when you buy used car you have 30 days to register it and so for this 30 days you can use a former owner insurance, but I don't know if it involves foreigners. That's a really general overview. A quicker way is to buy car in Poland and drive it to UK with old plates and old register card. In case of a police check you can always say the car was borrowed ;]. Just ask in DVLA what documents they need. If a car selling agreement, register card and plates are enough You can be a happy 126p owners.

Wow! Thank you for all your help!

I understand it's going to be quite a challenge, but it will also be great fun!

Witek that would be great thank you, there are a couple of girls at my university who will help me read it!

I'm ok with the car once I get to the U.K., I'm just concerned that i won't be insured driving the car through Europe!
drszajba, does this mean that if I were to take the car out of the country and get it to England before the 30 days it would be insured under the previous owner?

We have now booked our flights and will be in Krakow from Wednesday 7th April and have had some very kind offers to help us find a car and help with the language. Thank you very much! If anyone would like to show us the nightlife and maybe join us...

Thank you all so much for your help! We look forward to meeting some of you out there!!

Yes, the car is insured under previous owner unless there is an article in agreement that says differently. So find out a car with a valid insurance and watch out if there's an article in the agreement saying about insurance resignation. If it is, you won't be insured. If it isn't you can go back to UK in Your 126p. After the trip don't forget to cancel previous owner insurance, you've got 30 days to do it.
